캐나다의 인플레이션은 7월에 3.3 퍼센트였는데, 캐나다 중앙은행은 앞으로 몇 개월 이내에 급증하다가 다시 하락할 것으로 예상하고 있다.

Macklem은 연설 후에 진행된 기자회견에서 선출직들의 중앙은행에 대한 간섭 그리고 정치적 독립성에 대한 질문도 받았다.
연방정부의 Chrystia Freeland 재무장관은 9월 6일 Bank of Canada의 기준금리 유지를 환영하는 듯한 모습을 보이며 “캐네이디언들에게 안도감” 이라고 했다.
NDP는 한발 더 나아가 재무장관이 중앙은행에 금리인상을 중단하도록 요청해야 한다고 제안했다.
Macklem 총재는 “선출직 공무원들이 높은 인플레이션과 금리상승으로 인한 고통에 대해 유권자들로부터 많은 이야기를 듣는 것으로 알고 있다.”고 하면서 “중앙은행도 같은 이야기를 듣고 있다.”고 했다.
중앙은행 총재는 만약에 재무장관이 중앙은행에 금리에 대한 지시를 내린다면 어떻게 할 것인지에 대한 질문에는 답변하지 않았다. 그러나 그는 캐나다 역사에서 한번도 일어나지 않은 일이지만, 장관의 권한 내에 있는 일이라고 했다.
Macklem 총재는 기자들에게 “장관이 Bank of Canada의 독립성을 전적으로 존중한다는 점은 분명하다는 것이 나의 생각” 이라고 했다.
총재는 인플레이션 목표를 2 퍼센트로 유지해야 하는 이유에 대해 많은 시간을 할애했다.
그는 인플레이션을 낮추기 위한 노력에도 불구하고 속도가 느린 것은 이전 금리인상의 효과를 발휘하기까지 더 많은 시간이 필요하거나 금리가 아직 충분하게 높지 않다는 것을 말하는 것이라고 했다.
Macklem 총재는 중앙은행이 경제를 지원하는 가장 좋은 방법은 인플레이션을 2 퍼센트 목표로 낮추는 것이라고 했다.
Macklem 총재는 경기침체에 빠졌는지를 묻는 질문에 대해서는 “그렇게 생각하지 않는다.”고 했다. 그 이유는 생산량이 크게 줄어들지도 않았고, 실업률이 크게 증가한 것도 아니기 때문이다.
