뉴브런즈윅이 최저임금을 인상할 경우 사스캐치완이 11.81 달러로 가장 낮고, 다음으로 11.95 달러의 매니토바이다. Manitoba Federation of Labour의 Kevin Rebeck 대표는 매니토바가 두번째로 최저임금이 낮다는 것에 대해 창피함을 느낀다고 했다.
Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives 매니토바 지부가 계산한 자료에 따르면, 매니토바 가정 (4인가족: 부모 그리고 2자녀 기준)의 2020년 “생활임금”은 16.15 달러이다.

최저임금 근로자들은 최근 급등한 인플레이션으로 인해 어려움이 가중되고 있다. 지난 10월의 인플레이션은 2003년 3월 이후 가장 높은 4.7 퍼센트였다. 심지어 에너지 가격은 25 퍼센트나 인상되었다.
여러 지표들이 매니토바 근로자들의 어려움을 이야기하고 있다. 그 중에서도 가장 대표적인 것이 아동 빈곤율이다. 매니토바 아동 빈곤율은 28.4 퍼센트로 누나붓 다음으로 높은 비율이다.
최근 매니토바에서 일고 있는 최저임금 인상에 대해 Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB)과 같은 비즈니스 로비 단체들은 팬데믹 영향으로부터 벗어나는 초기단계에 있기 때문에 지금은 중소기업에게 비용을 부담시킬 때가 아니라는 주장을 하고 있다.
CFIB가 발표한 자료에 따르면, 스몰 비즈니스의 3분의 1은 팬데믹 이전의 수준으로 화복했지만, 30 퍼센트 이상은 손해를 보면서 운영을 계속하고 있다고 했다.
Manitoba Federation of Labour은 최저임금 인상이 비즈니스에 가져오는 영향을 최소화하기 위해서는 주정부가 비용을 흡수하는 지원책을 마련할 필요가 있다고 제시했다.
문제는 계속되는 높은 인플레이션이 저소득층에게 어려움을 줄 가능성이 높다는 것이다. 그래서 최저임금 인상에 대한 이야기가 계속적으로 제기되고 있는 것이다.
새로 취임한 Heather Stefanson 주주상은 선거기간 내내 전임자보다 더 개방적인 리더십을 발휘할 것이라는 점에 상당한 에너지를 쏟아부었고, 매니토밴들도 기대를 걸고 있다.
