■ Altona에서 열리는 Manitoba Sunflower Festival
팬데믹으로 인해 지난 2년간 열리지 못했던 Altona의 Manitoba Sunflower Festival이 올해는 7월 22일부터 24일까지 (3일간) 열린다.
Town of Altona에서 레크리에이션을 담당하는 Eric Hildebrand 매니저는 “이전의 행사에 비해 내용이 강화되었다. 대표적인 것은 토요일 밤 불꽃놀이 이다.”고 말했다.
행사의 하이라이트인 해바라기 미인을 선발하는 대회는 예정대로 진행되며, 참여를 원하는 사람들은 WC Miller Collegiate 그리고 Mennonite Collegiate Institute에서 지원을 받고 있다.
해바라기 미인대회에 참석하여 선발된 사람들은 자매도시인 호주의 Emerald에서 열리는 행사에 참여하며, Altona는 Emerald에서 선발된 사람들을 초청하고 있다.
2022 Sunflower Festival에는 특별한 이벤트도 계획되어 있다. 1956년부터 1965년까지 Altona Collegiate에 다녔던 사람들을 대상으로 동창회가 열린다. 동창회 참석자들은 이전에 고등학교로 사용되었던 현재의 Ecole West Park School을 견학하는 것은 물론이고, W.C. Miller Collegiate도 방문한다.
Town of Altona는 2022 Sunflower Festival에 자원봉사로 참여하려는 사람들은 레크리에이션 담당자에게 연락하기를 바라면서, 이벤트에 대한 정보는 소셜 미디어를 통해 업데이트할 것이라고 했다.
■ Morden Chamber 회원들을 대상으로 성공, 도전 그리고 미래에 대해 연설한 Brandon Burley 시장
City of Morden의 Brandon Burley 시장은 4월 14일 Morden Chamber에서 열린 강연에서 시의 미래 그리고 중점적으로 실시하고 있는 사항들에 대해 이야기했다.
Burley 시장은 2021년은 서비스를 삭감하지 않으면서 2020년에 비해 1인당 운영비를 줄였는데, 2022년에도 같은 방향으로 운영할 것이라고 했다.
Burley 시장은 Lake Minnewasta와 관련하여 많은 이야기를 했다: 4계절 여행 목적지로 조성, 녹조문제 해결 그리고 상수원으로서의 기능 등.
그는 City of Morden이 MCDC (Morden Community Development Corporation)를 통하여 실시하고 있는 이민자 프로그램이 성과를 내기 시작하면서 지역 비즈니스의 인력난을 해결하는데 기여하고 있다고도 설명했다.

Burley 시장은 도시가 급격하게 성장해가고 있기 때문에 미래를 대비한 물 공급, 폐수처리 그리고 자산관리에 역점을 둘 것이라고 했다.
City of Morden은 또한 Assiniboine Community College 프로그램을 확대하는 것에도 역점을 두고 있다.
■ 토양 보존과 관리에서 성과를 인정받은 Kroeker Farms
Winkler의 Kroeker Farms가 Pembina Valley Watershed District (PVWD)와 Manitoba Department of Agriculture and Resource Development로부터 2022 Conservation Award를 받았다.
Conservation Award는 수질과 토양 보존 그리고 관리에 모범을 보이면서 성과를 내고 있는 사람들을 대상으로 수여하는 상이다.
PVWD는 Kroeker Farms가 피복작물, 유기농법 그리고 수자원의 건강을 농장의 생산성과 연결시키는 방법을 포함하여 다양한 방면으로 많은 노력을 기울이고 있으며, 성과를 내고 있다.”고 말했다.

Kroeker Farms의 Wayne Rempel 사장은 “토양 침식 그리고 유실을 줄이기 위해 다양한 방법을 시도해 보았다. 우리가 최근에 제일 많이 사용하는 방법은 피복작물이다. 감자를 수확한 다음 들판을 푸르고 아름답게 만들기 위해 씨를 뿌리고 있다.”고 말했다.
Rempel 사장은 “최근 10년전부터 나무심기에 많은 정성을 들이고 있다. 대부분의 나무가 잘못된 방향으로 심어져 있기 때문에 이를 제거하고 다시 심고 있다.”고 말했다.
Rempel 사장은 “Kroeker Farms를 30년 넘게 운영하면서 가장 역점을 둔 것이 토양 유실을 줄이고 환경을 보호하는 것이다. 앞으로도 토양 유실을 줄일 수 있는 방법을 찾아 최대한 노력하겠다.”고 말했다.
