    매니토바가 캐나다 양돈산업을 이끄는 이유

    매니토바에서 양돈산업이 번창하는 이유는 국내 최대규모의 정교한 종돈 유전학 시설이 있기 때문이다.

    현재 매니토바 종돈시장의 50 퍼센트 그리고 캐나다 시장의 30 퍼센트는 점유하고 있는 Topigs Norsvin Canada가 Gladstone 북서쪽 Plumas에 있는 시설에 50 밀리언 달러를 투자하여 최적의 양돈 유전자 시설을 업그레이드 그리고 확장하고 있다.

    네들란드 기업인 Topigs는 2008년 Maple Leaf Foods의 유전학 부문을 인수하면서 캐나다 비즈니스를 시작하였고, 2014년 노르웨이 기업인 Norsvin을 합병하면서 Topigs Norsvin Canada를 설립하였다. Topigs Norsvin Canada의 Cam McGavin 제너럴 매니저는 Maple Leaf Foods는 여전히 우리의 가장 중요한 고객이라고 했다.

    캐나다 연방정부와 매니토바 주정부는 Topigs Norsvin Canada가 Plumas에서 진행하는 연구 프로젝트에 Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP)를 통해 2.2 밀리언 달러 지원금을 지급한다.

    현재 건설중인 시설이 시운전을 실시하기도 전인데도 불구하고 100여명의 직원을 고용한 Topigs Norsvin Canada는 앞으로 30여개의 새로운 일자리가 추가될 것이라고 했다.

    Topigs Norsvin Canada의 Plumas 연구 프로젝트는 사료 효율성 증대, 모돈의 번식력 증대, 효율성 증대를 위한 기계학습과 인공지능 그리고 효율성을 높이기 위한 행동과학을 포함한 몇 가지 영역에 초점을 맞추는 것이다. 이들 중에서도 가장 주요한 것은 효율적인 사료 공급 기술을 사용하여 탄소 배출량을 줄이는 것이다.  

    McGavin 매니저는 보도자료에서 “총 사료 효율이 연구 프로젝트의 가장 큰 목표이다. 가능한한 적은 사료로 최대한 많은 고기를 생산하는 것이다. 이것이 업계 지속가능성의 핵심이며, 영혼이다.”고 말했다.

    이런 종류의 연구는 세계에서 처음으로 실시되는 것이며, Plumas 연구 프로젝트를 2022년까지 완료한다는 것이 Topigs Norsvin Canada의 목표이다.

    Topigs Norsvin Canada는 연구와 관련한 모든 데이터는 업계 이해관계자와 공유할 예정이며, 동물 건강 그리고 복지의 중요한 데이터 베이스를 구성할 것이라고 했다.

    연방정부의 Marie-Claude Bibeau 장관 (Agriculture 부문)도 Topigs Norsvin Canada 연구와 관련한 보도자료에서 환경적 그리고 경제적으로 양돈산업의 지속가능성을 한단계 끌어 올리는 기능을 할 것이라고 했다.

    Topigs Norsvin Canada는 매니토바에서 많은 양돈시설을 운영하고 있으며, 2008년 이후로 수백만 밀리언 달러를 투자하고 있다.

    매니토바 남동부 지역에 있는 라 브로쿼리 (La Broquerie)에 본사를 둔 하이라이프 (Hylife)는 사스캐치완의 사스카툰에서 패스트 지네틱스 (Fast Genetics)라는 씨돼지를 전문으로 연구 그리고 수출하는 자회사를 운영하고 있다.
