캐나다 한인과학 기술자 협회 (Association of Korean-Canadian Scientists and Engineers; AKCSE)가 주관하는 “2024년 수학‧과학 경시대회 (Mathematics and Science Competition)”가 5월 4일 (토요일) 매니토바 대학교 Wallace Building에서 열린다.
AKCSE 매니토바 지부 이재혁 지부장은 ‘차세대 과학기술자 양성’을 목표로 하는 경시대회의 취지에 대해 “잘하는 학생들을 찾아내어 더 잘할 수 있게 격려하는 것”은 물론이고, “처음으로 도전하는 학생들에게는 어떤 생각을 풀어내는 것이 수학이라는 것을 알려주는 기회가 될 수도 있을 것” 이라고 했다.
· 수학 경시대회:
오후 1시부터 진행되는 수학 경시대회는 4 – 11학년별로 60-90분간 시험을 본다. 시험 내용은 세가지 서로 다른 난이도의 문제들이 섞어서 주어지며, 문제 별 배점의 차이는 없다.

· 과학 경시대회:
3시부터 진행되는 과학 경시대회는 필기시험이 아니고 저학년 (4-7학년) 그리고 고학년 (8-11 학년) 두 그룹으로 나뉘어서 2-3명이 팀을 구성하여 60분간 정해진 프로젝트의 설명에 따라 주어진 재료를 사용하여 과제를 수행하는 능력을 경쟁하는 것이다. 동일 과제를 가지고 팀원들과 협동하는 과정에서 과학의 재미를 배울 수 있는 기회를 가질 수 있다.
AKCSE 매니토바 지부 이재혁 지부장은 “한국말을 잘하지 못하는 학생 및 외국인도 경시대회에 참가할 수 있으며, 학부모와 학생들의 많은 관심과 참여를 부탁드린다.”고 했다.

AKCSE 매니토바 지부는 경시대회 결과를 바탕으로, 캐나다 전체뿐만 아니라 매니토바 지역내 1-2등을 대상으로 수상을 준비하고 있다. 이번 경시대회가 매니토바에서 공부하는 학생들이 열린 마음으로 시도해보고, 앞으로 매년 본인의 성장을 객관적으로 평가받는 기회가 되기를 기대한다는 것 또한 AKCSE 매니토바 지부의 설명이다.
