Long-Bladed Weapon Control Act는 미성년자가 이러한 무기를 구매하는 것을 금지하고, 이러한 품목을 매니토바 주소로 운송하는 온라인 업체에게도 적용된다. 법안에서 규정한 ‘장날’의 무기는 길이가 30 센티미터 이상인 금속 칼날로 정의하고 있다.
법을 위반할 경우 벌금은 개인이 첫번째 위반시 최대 5,000 달러, 다음부터는 최대 10,000 달러까지 부과되며, 법인은 첫번째 위반시 최대 25,000 달러, 다음 위반부터는 최대 100,000 달러까지 벌금을 내야 한다.

Winnipeg Police Service는 곰 스프레이에 대한 법률을 도입한 후에 관련한 폭력범죄가 25 퍼세트나 줄었다고 하면서 마체테와 같은 무기를 제한하는 법률을 통해서도 동일한 성과가 나타날 것으로 기대한다고 했다. 경찰은 또한 이러한 법률은 무기가 갱단이나 범죄 조직의 손에 들어가지 않도록 하고, 수사에도 도움이 된다고 했다.
무기 판매를 제한하는 것을 주장해온 시민단체들은 마테체와 ‘장날’의 칼은 매우 위험한 무기이기 때문에 가능한한 빨리 실행되기를 희망한다는 반응을 보이고 있다.
