새로운 바이러스 EG.5는 오미크론 하위 변이이다. 일부의 사람들이 처음에는 EG.5를 Eris라고 불렀다. 그러나 WHO는 올해초 COVID-19 명명 시스템을 변경하여 Delta 그리고 Omicron처럼 우려되는 변종에만 별도의 이름이나 그리스 알파벳 레이블을 할당하고 변이에는 더 이상 별도의 이름을 붙이지 않기로 했다.
World Health Organization (WHO)는 7월 19일 모니터링 중인 현재 순환하는 변이 목록에 EG.5를 추가하였다. 현재까지 새로운 변이와 관련된 사례가 영국, 미국 그리고 기타의 국가에서 보고되었다.
영국 Health Security Agency는 최근 데이터에서 EG.5가 영국 전체 COVID-19 사례의 14.6 퍼센트 또는 7명중에 1명을 차지한다고 했다.
미국 Center for Disease Control and Prevention은 EG.5가 지난 2주간 미국에서 발생한 새로운 COVID-19 사례의 14.6 퍼센트를 차지하는 것으로 추정했다.
캐나다에서는 아직 EG.5 사례가 보고되지는 않았지만, 곧 나타날 것으로 예상된다는 것이 헬스 전문가들의 의견이다.
EG.5 증상은 오미크론의 다른 변이 바이러스에서 관찰된 것과 매우 유사할 것으로 예상되며, 곧 전 세계적으로 가장 지배적인 변이가 될 것으로 예상되고 있다. BA.2, BA.4, BA.5, XBB 그리고 EG.5는 동일한 커뮤니티이다.
