이코노미스트들이 이런 예상을 하는 이유는 노동시장이 아주 타이트하고, 높은 인플레이션 상황이기 때문이다.
기그 근로자(gig worker)라면, Uber나 SkipTheDishes와 같은 앱을 기반으로 하는 회사와 일하는 것으로 생각한다. 사실은 훨씬 더 오래되었다. 기그 근로자를 넓은 의미로 표현하면, 계약직, 임시직, 시간제 또는 단시간 근로자들이 해당한다고 볼 수 있다. ‘즉시 (just-in-time)’ 활용가능한 근로자로 볼 수 있다.
Statistics Canada 자료에 따르면, 캐나다 전체 근로자 중에서 기그 근로자가 차지하는 비중이 2005년 5.5 퍼센트에서 2016년에는 8.2 퍼센트로 늘어난 것으로 나타났다. 이 기간에 두번의 급증이 있었는데, 그 중에 하나가 2008-09년의 글로벌 금융위기 여파였다.

또 한가지는 2023년 경기침체의 강도에 달려있다. 많은 이코노미스트들은 ‘마일드한 경기침체’를 예상하고 있다. 그러나 반대로 진행될 경우에 노동시장은 실직자 증가, 기그 근로자 그리고 자영업자 증가와 같은 이전의 경기침체처럼 나타날 가능성이 있다는 것 또한 여러 이코노미스트들의 예상이다.
