매니토바 주정부는 현재의 이민 정책과 프로그램을 개선하기 위해 새로운 자문위원회를 만들었다고 발표했다
Immigration Advisory Council은 매니토바 주정부의 Advanced Education, Skills and Immigration 장관 그리고 Lloyd Axworthy 박사가 공동으로 의장을 맡기로 했으며, 신규 이민자 증대는 물론이고, 매니토바를 떠나지 않도록 만드는 전체 과정을 검토한다. 위원회가 다룰 내용에는 Canada-Manitoba Immigration Agreement 강화 그리고 매니토바 주정부에 제안할 구체적인 조치 그리고 권고할 사항을 제안하는 것도 포함되어 있다.
매니토바 주정부의 Heather Stefanson 주수상은 “Immigration Advisory Council가 다룰 사항에는 의회 개원연설에서 언급한 바와 같이 투자를 장려하고, 일자리 창출을 촉진하고, 교육 그리고 훈련의 기회를 개선하는 것이 포함되어 있다. 우리는 이민이 다양한 노동력 증대 그리고 경제에 큰 기여를 한다는 것을 알고 있다.”고 말했다.
Stefanson 주수상은 “새로운 위원회는 신규 이민자들이 자신 그리고 가족들을 위한 기회 그리고 안정적이고 윤택한 삶을 누릴 수 있도록 돕는 방안들을 제시할 것이다. 난민, 유학생 그리고 모든 신규 이민자들을 위한 주택문제, 이민 그리고 기업 투자자를 위한 매력적이 목적지 그리고 방문자들을 적극적으로 환영하는 매력적인 목적지가 되도록 새롭고 창의적인 방법을 찾는데 도움을 줄 것으로 생각한다.”고 말했다.
다음은 Immigration Advisory Council이 중점적으로 다룰 내용이다:
ㆍ 더 많은 이민자와 기업 투자자를 매니토바로 유치하기 위한 프로모션 프로세스 구축;
ㆍ 노동시장, 경제개발 그리고 지역사회의 요구를 균형적으로 반영하기 위해 Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program 간소화; 그리고
ㆍ 매니토바 정착 프로그램과 서비스를 통합하고, 기술을 가진 이민자를 더 많이 유치하기위해 외국인 자격 인증 프로그램 개선.
Axworthy 공동의장은 “이민은 매니토바에서 중요한 사항이기 때문에 효과적이고 효율적인 시스템을 구축하는데 우리 모두가 관심을 갖고 있다. 매니토바의 현재와 미래를 생각하면서 위원회를 이끌어 가겠다.”고 말했다.
매니토바 주정부 발표에 따르면, 2021년에 6,275명이 Manitoba’s Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP)에 지명되었는데, 이는 1998년 프로그램이 설립된 이후 가장 많은 지명자이다.
2021년 MPNP 지명자 중에서 2 퍼센트가 Winnipeg Capital Region 외부에 정착하기로 했다. 이들이 가장 많이 선택한 목적지는 Brandon, Neepawa, Steinbach, Winkler, Thompson 그리고 Portage였다. 그리고 지난해 MPNP 지명자들이 많이 선택한 직종은 트럭 운전사, 식품점 직원, 식품 서비스 관리자, 요리사 그리고 고객 서비스 담당자였다.
매니토바를 정착지로 선택하는 불어권 이민자도 꾸준하게 증가하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 2014년 이후로 2,000명 이상의 프렌치 사용자들이 매니토바에 도착했는데, 이 중에서 1,400명 이상이 MPNP 지명자들이었다.
