뉴브런즈윅 주정부가 내년 최저임금 2달러 인상을 발표하자 매니토바에서도 인상을 요구하는 목소리가 나오고 있다.
뉴브런즈윅의 PC 정부는 현재 캐나다에서 최고로 낮은 최저임금 11.75 달러를 내년에 2달러 인상할 것이라고 지난주에 발표했었다. 뉴브런즈윅이 시간당 최저임금을 인상할 경우 매니토바 (11.95 달러)는 캐나다에서 사스캐치완 (11.81 달러) 다음으로 낮은 최저임금이다. 캐나다에서 시간당 최저임금이 가장 높은 곳은 16달러의 누나붓이다.
뉴브런즈윅의 Trevor Holder 장관 (Labour 담당)은 캐나다에서 가장 낮은 최저임금이라 것은 “정말 창피한 것” 이라고 하면서, 내년도 4월 1일에 1달러 그리고 10월 1일에 1 달러를 인상할 것이라고 했다.
Manitoba Federation of Labour의 Kevin Rebeck 회장은 “캐나다에서 두번째로 낮다는 것이 창피한 것이다.”고 하면서 “매니토바 수천명의 근로자들은 풀-타임으로 일하면서도 빈곤선 아래에 머물고 있다. 변화가 필요하다.”고 했다.

Kinew 리더는 “풀-타임으로 일하는 매니토밴들이 빈곤선에 머물도록 해서는 안된다. 인플레이션과 보조를 맞추는 최저임금 법안은 문제가 있다. 그래서 최저임금을 대폭 인상해야 한다.”고 했다.
Rebeck 회장은 “매니토바 주정부는 인플레이션과 최저임금 인상을 연동시키는 법안을 만들면서 비정치화를 만들기 위한 목적이라고 했는데, 그것은 말도 안되는 소리이다. 그들은 빈곤선의 임금을 제도화했다. 그렇기 때문에 바뀌어야 하고, 새로운 법이 필요하다.”고 했다.
