새로운 여론조사에 따르면, 매니토바를 상징하는 깃발에 대한 매니토밴들의 생각은 거의 반반으로 나뉘는 것으로 나타났다.
Probe Research가 8월 1일부터 9일까지 매니토밴 800명을 대상으로 실시한 조사에 따르면, 응답자의 49 퍼센트가 매니토바 주기 교체를 원했고, 51 퍼센트는 유지를 원했다. 유지를 원하는 27 퍼센트는 어떤 변화도 강력하게 반대하는 것으로 답했다. 강력하게 교체가 필요하다고 답한 사람은 16 퍼센트였다.
응답자들은 깃발이 매니토바 인디지너스 인구를 더 잘 반영해야 하는지에 대해서도 균등하게 나뉘어졌다. 이것은 Union Jack과 St. George’s Cross를 유지해야 하는지에 대한 질문에서도 유사하게 나타났다.
Probe Research는 인디지너스 출신의 주수상도 배출한 매니토바에서 영국 식민지 시절의 상징이 공공 기록과 매니토바의 정체성의 일부가 되는 것에 대한 광범위한 논의와 변화에 대한 이야기가 있어야 한다는 것이 나타난 조사라고 했다.
매니토바의 현재 깃발은 1965년 Maple Leaf 디자인을 채택하기 전에 국기로 사용했던 Red Ensign과 비슷하다. 왼쪽 코너 상단 코너에 Union Jack이 있는 빨간색 배경과 지방 문장이 있는 방패가 특징이다.
주기에 대한 매니토바 주정부의 공식 설명이 따르면, 방패에는 인디지너스 사람들을 상징하는 바이슨이 들어가 있으며, 인지지너스들은 바이슨을 음식과 옷을 만드는데 사용했다. St. George 십자가는 영국의 수호성인을 나타낸다. 이 십자가는 한때 매니토바 영토를 통치했던 Hudson’s Bay Company 문장에서도 발견되었다.
매니토바에서는 최근 식민지 뿌리에 대한 논쟁이 벌어지고 있다. 예를 들면, 2021년 Canada Day에 시위대들이 매니토바 주청사 부지에 있는 Queen Victoria 동상을 무너뜨렸고, 지난해에는 기숙학교 시스템 설계에 참여한 주요한 인물의 이름을 사용한 Bishop Grandin Boulevard를 Abinojii Mikanah로 변경하였다.
Probe Research 조사에 따르면, 젊은 성인과 위니펙 거주자들이 새로운 주기를 더 많이 원하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 노년층과 시골 거주자들은 반대하는 경우 더 많았다. 데이터에 따르면, New Democratic Party 지지자들은 Progressive Conservative 지지자들에 비해 변화를 원하는 사람이 3배나 많았다.
