Giving is a miracle that can transform, the heaviest of hearts…two people who moments before lived in separate worlds of private concerns, suddenly meet each other over a simple act of sharing…the world expands, a moment of goodness is created, and something new comes into being where before there was nothing.
Luke 6:38 – Give and it will be given to you a good measure press down a shaken together and running ever will be poured into your lap…for with the measure you use it will be measure to you
Too often we are blind to the everyday miracle we build around accumulation – of money, of possessions, of status – as a way of protecting ourselves and our families from the vagaries of the world, without thinking, we begin to see giving as an economic exchange – a subtracting of something from who and what we are and use weight it on the scales of self-interest.
Matthew 23:23-25 & 28 – verse23…you give a tenth of your species…but you have neglected the weightier matter of things – justice, mercy and faith…verse24…blind guides …verse25…hypocrites…you are full of extortion and excess…verse 28…you appear righteous unto man but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity
Job 20:5 – the joy of the hypocrite is for a moment
John 12:43 – for they loved the praise of man, more than the praise of GOD
But True Giving is not an economic exchange…it is a generative act…it does not subtract from what we have…it multiplies the effect we can have in the world
2 Corinthians 9:7-8– verse 7…do not give reluctantly or under compulsion for God loves a cheerful give…verse 8…and God is able to make all grace abound to you
Many people tend to think of giving only in grand gestures…they miss the simple openings of the heart that can be practiced anywhere with almost everyone…we can say Hi! To someone everybody ignores…we can buy a bouquet of flowers and take it to a nursing home or spend an extra minute talking to someone who needs our time.
We can take ten dollars out of our pockets and give it to someone on the street…No praise, no hushed tones of Holy generosity…Just give, smile and walk away
Matthew 25:45 – whatsoever you have done to the least of these, you have done to me…”In everything you do, do it as unto the Lord.”
If you perform these simple acts, little by little you’ll start to understand the miracle of giving Proverbs 11:25 – the generous soul shall be made fat
You will begin to see the unprotected human heart and the honest smiles of human happiness…you will start to feel what is common among us, not what separates us or differentiates us
Galatians 5:26 – you are All children of God by faith in Jesus
Before long you will discover that you have the power to create joy and happiness by your simplest gestures of caring and compassion
Matthew 5:13-14 & 16 – you are the salt of the earth…verse 14 – light of the world…verse 16 – let your light shine
You will see that you have the power to unlock the goodness in others’ peoples’ hearts by sharing the goodness of yours
Acts 1:8 – you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…you will be my witnesses…to the ends of the earth
And most of all, you will find the givers…no matter where you live or where you travel…whether you speak their language or know their names, you will know them by their small acts, and they will recognize you by yours…you will become part of the continuity of humanity, that trust and shares and dares to reveal the softness of the heart
Romans 10:15 – how beautiful are the feet of those who bring glad tidings
Once you become a Giver you will never be alone
Hebrews 13:5 – Never will I leave you…Never will I forsake you

The Joy of Giving
When we give, we get an insight into how God feels…we understand why He’s so delighted to give us His Love and we share in His joy and the satisfaction of blessing others…”God gives first, and He always out-gives His most generous giver (1 Chronicle 29:14) – everything comes from you and we have given you only what comes from your hand
The greatest giver and gift – for all time and eternity – (John 3:16) “for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting Life.”
A Prayer: Father God You have made me to give to others just as you have given to me, teach me to give so that I can truly express my faith in Love (Galatians 5:6)…the only thing that counts is Faith expressing itself through Love
Giving is a joy if we do it in the right spirit…it all depends on whether we think of it as “what can I spare?” or “what can I share?”
Dear Reader Friends…be a giver and a sharer and you will surely rejoice and see the boundary lines falling for you in pleasant places.
Most of us think of giving only in terms of time and money…things we would like to share but barely have enough for ourselves…let us move beyond that idea of expanding – wisdom, attention, skills, forgiveness, respect, hope, (understanding, encouragement), and all that is good, pure and lovely.
My Dear Reader Friends…giving does more than just improve the lives of others…it affects our lives profoundly…it is hoped that this article On Giving may help you become a better giver…a more generous…more strategic…and that you in turn, may help others to become better giver as well.
