The rehearsal for “Grannies’ Fashion Show: We are Here” (Saturday, January 14th) took place on Sunday, January 1st, 2017 at the Friendly Chinese Dance Association of Winnipeg (219-221 Logan Avenue Winnipeg)
Seniors from different ethnic groups across the city have been busy making their own sets of traditional clothing since May of last year through the help of the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program grant in partnership with The Diversity Times and The Korea Times. The seniors consist of people who have emigrated from over 11 countries.
Grannies’ Fashion Show is composed of three parts: (1) Making traditional clothes and writing journal entries based on their experiences in their own language or English, (2) The fashion show itself, and (3) Publishing a book from the compilation of journal entries. The book will show who participated in the project, what the participants did, and their experiences from the clothing-making process and the fashion show itself.
Olivia Do, the director of this project said, “The fashion show will take place on Saturday, January 14th, 2017 at City Oasis Multipurpose Hall (435 Cumberland Avenue, Winnipeg). The seniors have worked so diligently on their incredibly well-made and beautiful costumes, and we hope to see a big turn out, as it will be a very fun, diverse and eye-catching show.” (Staff)
